About "Tribute to Thierry Mugler"

About the artwork

A tribute to Thierry Mugler (1948 - 2022) he was a French fashion designer as well as a perfume developer, director, photographer
and worked with the very biggest pop idols. He was known for his sculpted designs with broad chests, wasp waists, steely calves and bullet-round buttocks. Futuristic, bizarre, with a dash of sex and fetishism. In addition to typical couture fabrics such as silk and chiffon, he used latex, rubber and aluminum in which women sometimes looked like half machines or insects. Feminists strongly criticized Mugler for objectifying women; his work was sexist and cartoonish. In 1994 he unexpectedly received support from a feminist art historian who said: "Mugler's designs are so extreme that the women who wear them are not sex objects, but sex objects. In 2007, Mugler presented himself with a completely new look. He had his hip bone placed in his chin and had his nose widened. He said of his change: 'People on this planet have the perfect beauty. Everything I make is an homage to that, with all the tricks and tools I have for that.' He also lived on a houseboat in Amsterdam around 1973.
