A tribute to Jasper Johns (1930) he is a prominent American painter, sculptor and graphic artist. He is known for his paintings of the American flag. His work did not fit into the abstract expressionist movement of the time. He is seen as a direct predecessor of pop art. His work is characterised by his choice of materials. Johns often uses recognizable everyday subjects with a simple composition pattern, such as flags and numbers. He applies the paint generously. He also uses other materials such as plaster wax and 'real objects'. In March 2010, one of his flags from 1954 was auctioned for about 110 million dollars, putting him at the top of the list of most expensive living artists. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011.
