A tribute to Henri Émile Benoît Matisse (1869 -1954). He was a French painter and sculptor. He is known as the foreman of fauvism, the art movement in which the usually variegated use of colour plays the leading role within composition. He approaches the depiction of spatiality in a new way. He depicts space by applying the hot-cold contrast of colour. Warm colours, like yellow, orange and red, tend to stand out in a painting. Cold colours, like green, blue and violet, on the other hand, seem to recede. By arranging cold and warm colours and exploiting other possibilities of colour contrast, Matisse creates a visual rhythm. Because of his illness, he had to stay in bed a lot, which led him to develop a new technique and working method. He found the solution in working with painted paper (papiers gouaches), in which he cut and tore shapes that he reprocessed as collages 'papiers découpés'.
