About ‘Treasure trove of the kitchen - pulses’ by Sabine Schemken

This still life celebrates the natural beauty and diversity of pulses, which have been a staple food for thousands of years. Nine different varieties are presented in different bowls: from shiny black beluga lentils and bright orange red lentils to speckled pinto beans and round chickpeas. Each bowl is a small world in itself, revealing different textures, colours and shapes.

My inspiration was a fascination with the simplicity and yet enormous significance of these little powerhouses. I wanted to highlight the natural patterns and earthy colours that are often overlooked in everyday life. The clear top view and the dark, rustic background make the pulses look like precious jewels just waiting to be discovered and prepared. The interplay of light and shadow emphasises the depth and individual contours of each grain.

The atmosphere of the picture is authentic and calming. It conveys a feeling of naturalness, healthy eating and conscious cooking.

In interior design, this motif is an ideal eye-catcher for any kitchen or dining room. It goes perfectly with a modern country house style, but also blends harmoniously into minimalist designs or as a statement in restaurants and cafés that emphasise fresh and healthy ingredients. A must-have for food lovers and anyone looking to pay homage to the edible treasures of the earth.
