About "Torn consciousness"

by Klaus Tesching

About the artwork

The painting "Torn Consciousness" shows a person in profile whose face is divided into three sections, with the centre section representing a dark, almost invisible plane. This visual break symbolises the conflict within the individual - a separation between different layers of the mind, perhaps even of reality. While the outer layers are clear and distinct, the dark centre section hints at something hidden that lies dormant deep within and is not easily accessible.

In the background, we recognise a forest scene bathed in red mist, which appears threatening and mysterious. This scenery reinforces the idea of insecurity and inner turmoil. The young protagonist's expression is motionless, almost blank, which reinforces the feeling that he is trapped in a state of ignorance or disorientation. The red elements in the background could indicate inner turmoil or suppressed emotions. The image plays with the duality of light and darkness, consciousness and subconsciousness, and invites the viewer to engage with the hidden parts of the self.
