About ‘Time Is Money’ by Franka Poulain

An expensive watch lies alone in a narrow beam of light. No wrist, no owner, no rush. In *Time Is Money*, a classic status symbol is reduced to a silent object in an almost empty space. The contrast between deep dark blue and soft salmon pink lends the image a cinematic tension. The watch suggests success, precision and control, but without a person, time suddenly loses its urgency. In this way, the work subtly plays on our obsession with productivity, possessions and status. What does an expensive watch mean when there is nowhere left to go? The minimalist composition and strong lighting make the image stylish and serene, whilst the underlying idea is, in fact, slightly absurd. Luxury and transience converge in a single, simple moment.
