Appearance:
The Black Tern has dark plumage, especially in summer plumage, with a black head and belly. In winter, the plumage is lighter and the bird can be recognised by a black patch on the side breast.
Flight:
They have a distinctive, rocking flight reminiscent of a swallow.
Food:
They mainly eat insects, larvae and small fish that they catch low over the water.
Breeding habitat:
They breed in marshes and areas of shallow water, on floating aquatic plants such as crabgrass or on nest rafts.
