The woodpecker builds its nest by pecking a cavity into a tree stump with its beak. This makes it one of the few birds in our forests that builds its nest this way. It is widespread in the nature of Germany. It has a striking red crest and black and white plumage. This picture was taken at the beginning of autumn in a forest in the Bergisches Land. It was shortly after sunrise.
