The woman with the blue butterflies by Lauren Wilde

This work focuses on a woman's face, but her eyes remain hidden behind a cloud of blue and light purple butterflies. That is precisely what makes the image so intriguing. The gaze is not returned, shifting the focus to feeling and imagination. The butterflies seem to rest gently on her face, as if they have settled there of their own accord. They form not a barrier, but rather a veil between the inner and outer worlds.

Colour plays a major role in this. The different shades of blue – from cool ice blue to deep indigo – give the work a calm, almost ethereal appearance. Occasionally, a subtle purple or cream-coloured butterfly breaks the whole, creating depth and layering. The warm skin tones and soft lip colour bring balance and make the portrait human and accessible.

For me, this image symbolises thoughts that continue to float around. The butterflies can be seen as ideas, memories or emotions that sometimes become too much to face directly. Hiding the eyes creates space for introspection and silence. The portrait feels vulnerable, but not fragile. Rather, it is both modest and powerful at the same time.

The smooth background reinforces that feeling of tranquillity and allows the subject to come into its own. This work invites you to slow down, to look not with your eyes, but with your feelings. It is a portrait that does not reveal everything, and that is precisely why it lingers.
