The Spoonbill, scientific name Platalea leucorodia is a bird, belonging to the family of Ibises and Spoonbills.
Easily recognisable by its spoon/spoon-shaped bill with a beautiful yellow/orange patch at the end.
While foraging, mostly with its head/beak largely underwater where it will search the bottom for small insects, leeches, snails, worms, anything.
Even occasionally eats water plants.
Beautiful bird that (unfortunately) only has about 5 years as a life expectancy.
Mainly found in the shallow parts of water bodies, mud flats etc.
According to figures, there are around 3,000 breeding pairs in the Netherlands, including the Biesbosch.
It is a photogenic bird, when approached calmly, not shy either.
To take nice pictures of it or study its behaviour, patience is the magic word.
