About "The smile of eternity - Lokeshvara in the gentle breath of the morning"

by Walter G. Allgöwer

About the artwork

The Bodhisattva Lokeshvara, illuminated by the gentle morning sun, reveals a silent, mystical aura in the majestic towers of the Bayon Temple. The stone faces, mysterious and all-embracingly benevolent, gaze in all directions as if embracing the entire universe. In this soft light of early day, the cold hardness of the stone seems to come alive, imbued with a deep, spiritual energy. Lokeshvara's smiling countenance - the "Angkor smile" - speaks of compassion, wisdom and an unshakeable inner peace that transcends even time.
The sun lays its golden fingers on the finely chiselled contours of the face, revealing details that remain invisible in the direct midday heat. Moss and lichen, which adorn the faces like old scars, merge with the fine lines of the stone carving and tell of centuries of permanence and transience at the same time. A gentle wind blows through the towering spires and the world seems to stand still for a moment. The presence of Lokeshvara, who is revered in the Buddhist tradition as the embodiment of compassion, can be felt in this moment as if the temple itself were breathing - a testimony to past splendour and eternal spiritual resonance.
