A spectacular black-and-white photograph of the skyline of Cologne, Germany.
The center of Cologne was almost completely destroyed during World War II, as a result the current buildings are largely modern. Reconstruction followed the style of the 1950s, though the old layout, street plan and street names remained unchanged. As a result, the appearance of the city today is characterized by the simple and modest style of post-war construction, with pre-war buildings in between that have been restored because of their historical importance. The Altstadt with its alter market and Heumarkt are easily seen here, as of course are the Cologne Cathedral and the Great St. Martin's Church.
