About ‘The shipwreck of Zakynthos’ by Evelien Oerlemans

The story around the shipwreck of Zakynthos is special. The wreckage is on Navagio Beach. In 1982, a merchant ship carrying illegal cigarettes and spirits ran into trouble here due to extremely bad weather. The boat capsized and landed on the beach. The crew fled and because the beach can only be reached from the water the wreckage could not be removed. Not much later the inhabitants of Zakynthos discovered that it could become a tourist attraction. And it did! Meanwhile, the piece of island is visited daily by thousands of tourists.
