This dead - end road of no less than 65 km takes you to the foot of the highest mountain in New Zealand. Mount Cook, named after the English explorer James Cook, lies in the National Park of the same name and is 3764m high.
He is called "Aoraki" by the Maori, which means cloud piercer.
