In the Netherlands, redshanks are found all year round. It is a (still) numerous breeding bird, further there are large numbers of migrants and lesser numbers of wintering birds. One of the most important breeding areas in the Netherlands is the Verdronken Land van Saeftinghe, where almost 10% of the Dutch population breeds. Dutch breeding birds winter on the coasts of Portugal, Spain and north-west Africa. The redshanks that transit and winter in the Netherlands are birds from north-western Europe. They mainly stay in saline and brackish tidal waters.
