About "The owl goes hunting in the night"

by Jan Keteleer

About the artwork

I created this piece to represent the mistery of the night. An owl, a night predator, flies over a lake with a dead tree in the background and a moon surrounded by flickering stars. This is what you initially see, but is it really?

The owl has open eyes that radiate a certain aggressiveness. The dead tree symbolizes decay. you should therefore see this dead tree with a living tree that you see during the day. The moon? No, it is the planet Mars, which protrudes above the horizon. You would say that is impossible and that is correct. I use the planet Mars here as a symbol of the war or rather "the battle" which takes place in the dark of night.

We are not aware of it when we are sleeping but every night there is a battle going on between the animals.

I also use the flickering stars symbolically. Each star represents light, each star is also a sun that transforms night into day. So the stars are symbolic of the deglow light that is also present in the night. The day where the owl goes to sleep and his struggle ceases for a while.

I created this work using various digital techniques but mainly drawing with a pen tablet. The resulting drawing is then processed so that a painterly result is achieved.
