About "The modellers, fishing net repairers, MAX LIEBERMANN, 1887"

by Atelier Liesjes

About the artwork

A modeller was a woman who, at the time, was repairing the 'standing' nets used for fishing for herring. This activity, called 'Fining', was carried out almost exclusively by women.

Teams of modellers went early in the morning to the dune or meadow landscape to repair the damage, most of them sitting on the dunes or meadow, and sometimes standing up. With a special attribute called 'penitentiary needle', but with no resemblance to a needle, the discovered cracks were repaired by reducing the broken schools or meshes to their proper proportions by means of penitentiary cotton.

Max Liebermann (Berlin, Germany, 20 July 1847 - 8 February 1935) was a German painter, graphic artist, pastellist and illustrator. He was also professor at the Königliche Akademie der Künste in Berlin and president of the Preußische Akademie der Künste also in Berlin. His work shows a transition from realism to impressionism.
