About the artwork
The mermaid swam out of the Baltic Sea and then appeared on the banks of the Vistula in Warsaw to rest. Because the atmosphere at that spot was so beautiful, the mermaid decided to stay there. Some time later, local fishermen realised that something had disturbed the flow of the river, ripping their nets and releasing the fish in them. As it turned out, it was the mermaids who made their catch run away. The fishermen eventually caught the mermaid and planned to punish her. But when they heard the mermaid sing, they were amazed by her beautiful voice and let her live. The news about the mermaid living in the Vistula River was then heard by a cunning merchant. He realised that the mermaids could make a lot of money if they were displayed at fairs or exhibitions, so his evil intention arose to kidnap the mermaids. The cunning merchant then managed to capture the mermaid and then locked her in a cage without water. The mermaid screamed for help. Its cries were heard by a fisherman's child nearby. Together with people from his village, he then helped the mermaid to get free. As a token of gratitude, the mermaid vowed that she would always try to protect the rescuer and his offspring whenever necessary. Since then, with sword and shield, the mermaid Syrenka has been ready to protect the city of Warsaw and its inhabitants.
