I took this picture in the heart of the Porta Nigra in Trier, Germany. The image shows the inside of this impressive Roman city gate, built around 170 AD. You look straight into the depths, past two layers of round arches, sturdy pillars and weathered walls. The centuries have left their mark - the stones are dark, rough and scarred here and there by erosion and restoration.
The colour tones are earthy and subdued: deep greys, rusty browns, old stone. The soft, natural light coming from above highlights the texture of the walls and shows subtle colour differences between old and newer rock. There is a quiet power in this image. No people, no distractions - just the architecture, right in front of you.
The atmosphere is subdued and calm, almost mystical. You feel the history without the sculpture feeling heavy. It evokes curiosity: who once walked here? What took place here?
This work fits well in interiors seeking calm and depth - think modern, industrial or austere spaces. But it also comes into its own in a classical office or library. An image that invites you to look and to pause.
