About "The forests near the Per Gynt Seterveg, Norway"

About the artwork

Norway has many rugged areas and the landscape around the Peer Gynt Seterveg is no exception. This partly unpaved road is a beautiful toll route of about 45 km and it runs from Vinstra to Kvam through the mountains at the Rondane National Park. The road is only open part of the year, from mid-June to mid-October, when it's not snowing.

The photo was taken at the end of May near the Frydalen Valley, not too far from Kvam. On the left of the screen you can see a part of the Peer Gynt Seterveg that dives further into the woods. Besides forests, there are many rocks, low shrubs, mosses and sandy paths in this area. And despite the fact that there are some houses here and there, the landscape looks very rough and empty.

The Peer Gynt Seterveg is named after the play Peer Gynt written in 1867 by Hendrik Ibsen. This well-known Norwegian poet and playwright has traveled around the Rondane area at the request of the Norwegian government to collect folktales. On his journey, he gained inspiration for his story about Peer Gynt, a man from Vinstra who probably really existed, at least in the stories of the people.

The play became famous in part because of the music written by the Norwegian composer Edward Grieg.
