he drowning cottage - a refuge in anxious moments.
The drowning cottage on the Dutch wadden island of Terschelling can be found on the beach of Oosterend near the Bosplaat and served/served to provide a safe refuge for drowning people who were able to reach the beach in the event of shipwreck off the coast, or who were overwhelmed by the tide on the beach.

By hoisting the basket, the Terschelling rescue team could see that there were drowning people in the cottage who needed to be rescued.

To me, the cottage still exudes a sense of safety and security.
