The kingfisher is a small, colourful bird known for its striking appearance and fast, precise hunting techniques. It has a bright blue back, wings and head, which sparkle in the sunlight, and a rust-orange breast and belly. Its long, sharp bill is perfectly adapted to catch fish, which is its main food source. The kingfisher usually lives near clear, slow-flowing water such as rivers, streams or ponds, where it waits patiently on a branch above the water before diving down at lightning speed to grab its prey.
This specimen was captured near Marken in North Holland in August 2024.
