The Bridge on the River Kwai is an English feature by David Lean from 1957. The subject is the construction of a bridge over the River Kwai in Kanchanaburi in Thailand by English prisoners of war during the Second World War. The film is based on the book Le pont de la rivière Kwaï by Pierre Boulle. The film received seven Oscars including one for best film and one for best direction. The film was a great success in cinemas with sales of $ 39.2 million in 1957 in the US on a $ 3 million budget. In 1997, the film was included in the National Film Registry of Library of Congress because of its cultural, historical and aesthetic importance.
