The bridge in the sun
The Oosterpoort is the only remaining city gate of Hoorn, on the Draafsingel around the city center.
The tower was built in 1578 by Joost Jansz. Bilhamer and in 1601 a house was added on top. The gate lies on the, in 1577 dug, former defense canal "Draafsingel" (more specifically the piece called "Oosterpoortsgracht"). The wooden bridge leading to the gate was replaced in 1763 by the current brick arch bridge with wrought iron gates
The gate replaced the first Oosterpoort, which is present on maps from 1426 and 1615 (by Velius), and stood about 500 meters closer to the inner city, and was demolished in 1818. This gate is depicted on the facade of the middle of the three Bossu houses.
Until the 1950s it was, for all traffic to and from Enkhuizen, the only access on the east side of the town. After the construction of the Willemsweg in 1957, the gate was closed to motor vehicles.
Other gates in Hoorn included the Westerpoort and Koepoort. Also the Waterpoortbrug can be seen as a former city gate, the bridge also functioned as a water gate.
