The blue hour at Cádiz Cathedral in Andalusia by Silva Wischeropp

This striking cityscape was captured in the late evening of 1 September 2025, during the blue hour, using a NIKON D800 (lens: NIKKOR 24–70 mm f/2.8). The blue light, combined with the illuminated street lamps, lends the city panorama a particularly charming atmosphere. The enchanting cathedral glows in the last light of the summer day.

The 18th-century cathedral is one of the most important sights in Cádiz. It is situated right by the sea and in the historic centre on the Plaza de la Catedral. The ferry port, the Church of Santa Cruz and a Roman theatre are all in the immediate vicinity, and the railway station is not far away either.

The front portal of Cádiz Cathedral opens like a giant shell, thus living up to its name, Santa Cruz sobre el Mar or Santa Cruz sobre las Aguas. This impression is further emphasised by the pearly white colour, which turns a delicate pink in the evening hours. Then, directly behind the cathedral, the sun sinks into the sea, turning the water and sky a reddish-orange. You can surely picture the scene for yourself: a postcard.

Visible from every part of the city is the bright yellow cathedral dome, covered in glazed ceramic tiles. It hovers like an oversized egg yolk above the nueva catedral and the white roofs of Cádiz.

The construction of Cádiz Cathedral took 116 years. Various architects and master builders took turns at the helm, incorporating a wide range of styles: Baroque, Rococo and Neoclassical – the church was finally consecrated in 1838.

The bright light continues inside the cathedral, which appears spacious and generous and is structured by Corinthian marble columns. It measures 85 metres in length, 60 metres in width and an impressive 52 metres in height. Last but not least, it offers pleasantly cool temperatures in the scorching heat of the Andalusian summer.
