The Afsluitdijk between Friesland and North Holland on a sunny day.
On the right, one can see the statue of Ir. Lely.He designed the closing off and reclamation of the Zuiderzee as engineer of the Zuiderzee Association and this dyke built in 1932.
The Aflsluitdijk is 32.5 kilometres long, has served as a flood barrier for more than 90 years and has an important task to protect the Netherlands from floods.
The IJsselmeer used to be known as the Zuiderzee and was closed off from the Wadden Sea by this dyke. About 45 per cent of the Zuiderzee was reclaimed as polders.
