Artist impression of a fictitious Trappist monastery on one of the planets surrounding the ultracool dwarf star TRAPPIST-1. Indeed, not really at the end of the universe but nevertheless more than forty light years from Earth.
This dwarf star was in the news in 2017 because Belgian astronomers had discovered seven earth-like planets in orbit around it. The telescope they used to make that discovery was called TRAPPIST, which is an abbreviation for Transiting Planets and Planetesimals Small Telescope, but of course also a reference to Belgium's rich beer culture.
The terms ultracool and earth-like are relative, by the way; the chances of actually founding a viable monastic order there are slim. But in fantasy, anything is possible. And sipping on a double, triple or quadruple by the fireside while the freezing wind whips around the walls of the abbey, who wouldn't want that?
The monastery is located on the night side of one of the planets. The glow of TRAPPIST-1 can be seen beyond the horizon; in the dark sky are some of the other planets surrounding the dwarf star.
