This is the Where in Purmerend at night. The Where was originally a river between Lake Purmer and Lake Beemster and was also connected to the Zuiderzee. In the Middle Ages, the water was widened into a waterway between the two lakes. When those lakes were reclaimed, the usefulness of the Where disappeared and parts of it were filled in and drained. This section in Purmerend has been preserved, but is now considered a canal. The photo was taken from the bridge on the Hoornselaan. On the left is the Molenplantsoen, on the right is the park at the Overweersepolderdijk. Of course, the Where is not closed: on one side the canal is connected to the Purmerringvaart and on the other to the North-Holland Canal. Good for water recreation.
