Christ hangs on the cross between two murderers, surrounded by apostles, his mother, disciples and soldiers. Rembrandt executed the scene entirely in the drypoint technique, which had (almost) never been done before. This involves using an etching needle to scratch directly into the copper, giving the lines a ragged, velvety character. The giant print is also printed with light plate tone.
