At a grey sunset, we sailed the ship De Blijdschap towards the Engelsmanplaat, a quiet sandbank between Ameland and Schiermonnikoog. The sky was heavily overcast, and the mudflats were calm and vast. On the way, we passed a sandbank where a group of seals were resting. Moments before, a seal release had taken place. They stayed close together, still a bit uncomfortable, while the other seals watched them curiously but remained quiet themselves. It was a special scene that added an extra dimension to the trip. Arriving at the Englishman Plate, we were surrounded by silence, interrupted only by the gentle murmur of the wind. The sun slowly disappeared behind the grey cloud cover, and the world coloured along in shades of silver and steel. A subdued, impressive moment on the mud flats.
