About ‘The Shape of Two’ by Color Square

Two stylised faces that appear to emerge in white relief from a rough, monochrome background. The absence of colour places all the emphasis on form, shadow and texture. The faces are constructed from sharp, minimal lines: long noses, closed eyes and narrow mouths are not drawn, but suggested as cut-out or raised surfaces. This gives the image a sculptural quality, as if it were floating somewhere between paper, plaster and stone. The composition is distinctive due to the close intertwining of the two profiles. One face looks to the right, the other seems to lean against it from the left. The vertical line in the centre functions both as a dividing boundary and as a connection. Small details, such as the subtle shadow beneath the eyelids and the sharp contours of the lips, lend the simple forms a surprising amount of expression. The grainy surface texture reinforces the sense of stillness and tangibility.

The work evokes associations with minimalist art, abstract portraiture and modern wall sculpture. It is understated, pure and intimate: a sculpture about closeness, silence and recognising the other in the same form.
