About "The Shadow of Light and Color"

by Jan Keteleer

About the artwork

In this painting, I sought to explore the intricate dance between light and shadow that characterizes the life of the African woman depicted. She stands with a quiet dignity, gazing at her vibrant village—a place teeming with colors, nature, and simplicity. Yet, behind her, the shadow of a man looms, rather than her own. This shadow is a symbol of the male influences in her life, reflecting both support and challenge, a nod to past connections or the dominant presence in her community.
The bridge silhouette further enriches this narrative, representing her transitional journey. It is a metaphor for bridging the gap between the joys and sorrows she faces daily, portraying her strength in navigating these dualities. The figure on the bridge suggests an unknown future, filled with possibilities of connection or disconnection.
The village scene is painted with vivid realism, capturing the serene beauty of rural life, while the dark, shadowy base of the canvas introduces a surreal undertone. This darkness symbolizes the hidden struggles and complex realities beneath the surface. Through this blend of styles, I invite the viewer to ponder the layers of existence, the interplay of visible joy and hidden challenges in the woman's life and community.
