In 1885 Toorop lived in Brussels, where he was a member of the circle of artists "called Les Vingt (out of 20). There he was exposed to (see in this gallery) the work of Gustave Courbet, often painted with a palette knife. Two years later, Toorop made this sea-scape, also using a palette knife in places. The effect is real; But when seen close up, it has an incredible mix of colors.
The original hangs in the Rijksmuseum and oil on canvas. This work, therefore, is probably best law on canvas. The original size is 86 x 96 cm.
