On the north-eastern edge of the Harz Mountains, the River Bode emerges from the mountains and has carved a deep gorge between the steep, legendary cliffs of Hexentanzplatz and Roßtrappe.
In this gorge, the wild and romantic Bode Valley, visitors can expect exciting myths and legends, fairy-tale forests, babbling brooks and raging rivers, fascinating rock formations and marvellous views.
The numerous mixed forests around the "mightiest rocky valley north of the Alps" are naturally tranquil and fabulously beautiful. Together with flowering mountain meadows, babbling brooks and refreshing forest lakes, they form the diverse hiking arena of the Bode Valley, which captivates tens of thousands of hikers and nature lovers every year.
The Rosstrappe is a 403 metre high granite rock on the left bank of the Bode. It is considered one of the most impressive rock formations north of the Alps. There is a depression in the rock that resembles a giant hoof print. Because of this depression, legends and myths have surrounded the massif for centuries. The best-known legend explains the origin of the striking hoofprint and gives the rock its name.
