About ‘The Road to Hope’ by Christian Carrette

This painting depicts a young woman, seen from behind, walking barefoot towards a bright, radiant light. She is moving along a path that seems to disappear into an almost surreal landscape. Her light-coloured dress is billowing in the wind, whilst her hair follows the same movement.

The composition is based on a stark contrast between darkness and light. The sides and the foreground are dominated by deep shades of blue, grey, brown and almost black. Gradually, the colours grow lighter, giving way to ochre, gold, white and subtle shades of turquoise, right up to the sun situated in front of the woman.
A more poetic interpretation

She does not yet know what awaits her at the end of the road.
She knows only that she does not want to go back.
Barefoot, carried by the wind, she continues on her way.
Behind her, the shadows remain; ahead of her, the light opens up.
Every step erases a piece of the past.
She walks towards the unknown, but for the first time, the unknown resembles freedom.

This painting evokes feelings of liberation, change and hope, with an almost spiritual atmosphere.
