The Reitdiep (formerly Groninger Diep) is a deep one from the city of Groningen (Noorderhaven) to Lauwersmeer. The Reitdiep area (also called Reitdiepdal) is one of Europe's oldest cultural landscapes. The strong meandering river Hunze (now Reitdiep) connected Groningen with the sea. In the current landscape, the old river beds are still visible in many places, for example around the Oude Diepje at Winsum. The first suburbs are still very visible and not much changed. Most of the lines are about 1000 years old and this time is very tangible.
