The Rotes Rathaus is the seat of the Governing Mayor and the Senate of Berlin.
The eye-catching building is also a well-known landmark of the city. The building near Alexanderplatz does not get its name from its political orientation, but from its bright red brick façade.
The Red City Hall was built between 1861 and 1869 according to the designs of Hermann Waesemann. Just four years after the foundation stone was laid, the first magistrate's meeting was held in the town hall. The red colour of the bricks is particularly eye-catching and is especially bright in the evening sun. The almost 74 metre high tower is visible from afar.
