The White House in Rotterdam, designed by architect William Molenbroek and completed in 1898, although only 43 meters high, was for a long time the tallest office building in Europe. The building survived the bombing of 1940 and a demolition proposal in the seventies and is now widely regarded as one of the icons of the city.
The Red Apple, 124 meters high, is much more recent. Designed by KCAP, the complex of apartments, offices and a car park at the tip of Wijnhaven island was completed in 2009.
Both buildings are seen here reflected in the water of the Old Port with its historic ships.
