About ‘The Peace Oak in the evening light of autumn’ by Catrin Grabowski

The Peace Oak near Hombressen in the Reinhardswald is far more than just a beautiful tree: it was planted around 150 years ago to mark the end of the Franco-Prussian War as a symbol of peace and has stood ever since as a silent witness to history in the North Hessian countryside. On this autumn evening, the warm light of the setting sun bathes the mighty crown of the tree in deep colours, lending it an almost reverent grandeur.

As the area has since lost its original character due to the construction of a wind farm, photographs such as these now hold a special sentimental value – they show the oak in the landscape as it has been seen for generations. One of my best-selling and, personally, most meaningful images.
