On a sunny late summer morning this beautiful picture was taken on the Parade in 's-Hertogenbosch, overlooking the tower of the Sint Jans Cathedral.
The Cathedral Basilica of St. John Evangelist,[1] commonly referred to as the St. John's Cathedral, in the inner city of 's-Hertogenbosch is generally considered the high point of Brabant Gothic architecture. The particularly harmonious interior is the result of the unity of style that was maintained throughout the building period from the end of the 14th to the beginning of the 16th centuries. The exterior, with its generous ornamentation, such as the double air arches with the 96 air bow figures and the reliefs above the windows, provides a striking picture of the decorative urge of the late Gothic period. St John's is "a structure that is utterly unique in Dutch church architecture."[2]
St John's stands on the corner of Parade and Torenstraat, on which the main entrance is located, and impresses by its size and wealth of sculpture. Originally built as a parish church, in 1366 the St. John's was elevated to a collegiate church and in 1559 to the cathedral of the new diocese of 's-Hertogenbosch. On 22 June 1929 the St. John's was given the honorary title of basilica. The building has the shape of a cruciform church, more specifically a cross basilica.
