The Oostvaardersplassen is a nature reserve of 5600 ha (56 km²) between Almere and Lelystad in the Dutch province of Flevoland. The area was created after the Flevopolders were drained (1950-1968) and is therefore relatively young. The Oostvaardersplassen are of international importance as marshland and wintering area for birds. The area can be roughly divided into two parts: a wet area (ca. 3600 ha) and a dry area (ca. 2000 ha). The dry part is considered a suitable habitat for large grazers.
