The Night Watch is the best known and first masterpiece by Rembrandt van Rijn. Rembrandt painted it between 1639 and 1642. A more formal title is: The Militia Company of Captain Frans Banninck Cocq and Lieutenant Willem van Ruytenburgh prepares to march out. This work, a militia painting, was ordered by a company of archers as the group portrait. It was probably around 1796/1797 for the first time called The Night Watch
