Vianen is a medieval fortified town on the river Lek, which received city rights in 1335-36. Vianen built defences on it, each with its own entrance gate: The Oostpoort in the east, the Landpoort in the south, the Hofpoort in the west, and this one, the Lekpoort in the north.
The Lekpoort comes from the 15th century. For centuries, the top was home to a prison. The Lekpoort is the only one that has been preserved, because the other gates and most of the defences were demolished in the 19th century.
The road in the picture is the Voorstraat and leads directly to the ferry connection over the Lek to Nieuwegein. On the other side of the gate brings you directly into the center of Vianen.
This photo belongs to the series Modern History and is therefore executed in black and white.
