In the southern part of Iceland lies a unique area of volcanic rock and hot springs. Beautiful colourful rocks are interspersed with valleys of cotton grass. Glassy obsidian rock and colourful Rhyolite mountains are characteristic around Landmannalaugar.
I was there to walk the Laugavegur trail; a 4-day arduous trek through Iceland's volcanic region. During your trek, you are self-sufficient; everything has to be carried on your back. Tent, sleeping bag, cooking utensils, clothes and one heavy professional camera.
The first two days will take you through colourful and fantasy territory, like you only see in the film versions of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.
An area full of waterfalls, geothermal springs and deep gorges. Hiking through this spectacular area is an experience I would grant anyone. For those who cannot, I captured as much as I could with my camera.
The route ends in Thorsmork, at the foot of Eyjafjallajökull, the volcano that shut down all European air traffic in 2010.
