About ‘The Lace Edge of the Tide’ by Bert Oosthout

The Lace Edge of the Tide is a painting by the Dutch marine painter Bert Oosthout. The technique of the original is oil on linen and measures 60 x 60 cm.

This seascape depicts surf rolling onto the beach. The focus is on the texture of the water and the reflection of light on the surface. The foreground is calm, but at the level of the surf and the sea, there is a strong breeze: against the dark sky, seagulls hover on the wind and spray is blown off the wave tops.

The inspiration for this painting was drawn from a visit to the Atlantic coast in South Africa.

The color palette consists mainly of shades of green, blue, and beige/brown for the sand.
