Jocus is the oldest existing carnival society in the Netherlands.[1]. The association was founded on 6 October 1842 and is located in Venlo. It organises the proclamation of the prince, several sessions and the parades through the city. Each year Jocus decides which body or association may organize the Farmers' Wedding Venlo. The motto of the association is Jocus Vitae, Quod Sal Coenae, what the Joeks is for life, is the salt in the porridge or in the Venlo: Joeks is veur 't laeve, whaat 't zalt is in the porridge means. This motto was also the motto of the jubilee seasons 1996-1997 (14x11), 2007-2008 (15x11) and 2018-2019 (16x11). The symbol of the association is a rooster (the so-called Jocus rooster). A statue of this is on the right in front of the town hall in Venlo.
