Quite hidden in the centre of Utrecht, between the Lauwerecht/Bemuurde Weerd and the Vecht, is a small flowerbed that is maintained independently by the neighbourhood: the Jan van Lingtuin. Jan van Ling was a local resident who, in the early 70s, took it upon himself to maintain bare places in the neighbourhood as if it were his own garden. He did this fanatically and his work grew bigger and bigger. In 1975 he proposed to the municipality of Utrecht to turn it into a beautiful official garden. Utrecht saw something in the proposal and in 1976 a garden was created here, which would later be called the Jan van Lingtuin.
Jan van Ling died in 1984, but the neighbourhood continued his work and from this a quiet oasis on the river Vecht was created. Some benches, three streetlights, a work of art, lots of trees and plants and a gravel path for some walking. It is really quiet. The Jan van Lingtuin is freely accessible between 8 am and 10 pm. Please do not bring your dog, they are not allowed.
This picture was taken in early spring 2019.
