The system of corridors in the Sint Pietersberg is actually better known as the Maastricht Caves. Millions of years old fossilised sea creatures and sandy soil together form a thick layer of marl created by the Cretaceous sea. Blocks of white-yellow marl in the corridors have been sawn and broken for house-building and the cement industry.
