About ‘The Golden Watch’ by BS

The most striking version of the *Night Watch* series: Rembrandt’s militia members have been completely transformed into hip-hop icons. Heavy chains, leather varsity jackets, bucket hats and oversized jewellery dominate the scene. The two central figures exude authority and self-confidence, whilst the group in the background poses with the swagger of an album cover. One figure holds a smartphone whose screen glows in the dark — a modern equivalent of Rembrandt’s famous play of light. This artwork draws a direct line between seventeenth-century militia culture and contemporary hip-hop culture: both revolve around group identity, visual presentation and the assertion of space. The painterly texture and dramatic chiaroscuro remain intact, allowing the work to retain the gravitas of the original. The drum on the right of the image forms a subtle reference to the musical undertone of the whole. Ideal for collectors of urban art, digital Renaissance art and anyone fascinated by the parallels between the Old Masters and modern pop culture.
