The flamboyant tree is a distinctive and regularly occurring tree species for the sub-tropics.
It is an up to 15 m tall tree with an up to 20 m wide, umbel-shaped crown and a trunk with a circumference of 130 cm or more. The leaves are alternately placed, finely double-spined, up to 50 cm long and up to 25 cm wide. Each leaf consists of hundreds, up to 1 cm long, light green second-order partial leaves, which fold together in the evening. In dry times the leaves may fall off, but the tree rarely remains bare for long.
